I am woman…hear me ROAR!
Last night my husband and I were talking about sports activities like baseball games or golf. These are two sports that for me personally… please don’t be offended, I do not particularly enjoy. I think part of it is, I was not raised in a sports centric home. I think my brother/ business partner is the biggest sports fanatic in my immediate family.
So, back to my conversation with my husband. I commented to him, “Let me go hiking at Devils Lake State Park or take me skiing in Colorado and I am in heaven; make me go to a baseball game and I whine like a baby.” I continued to express to him the sports I enjoy are ones that put me smack dab into nature. As I have grown older, I have learned to appreciate the beauty of nature and my environment around me. For me, there is something cathartic about stepping outside and just being present.
Recently, I had a friend text me a blog post. She thought it perfectly coincided with what we are trying to accomplish with AlpineCurves. The article was about REI’s recent Forces of Nature campaign. If you aren’t familiar with it, I encourage you to read the blog post. I am not going to lie, when I read their blog post it got me in the feels. I got chills y’all!
Part of REI’s findings are that 63% of woman said they could not think of a female outdoor role model. That’s just crazy, not only is that crazy… it’s a shame. I am pretty sure if I were to poll all my plus sized female counter parts, many of us would say we have very few, if any, outdoor role models. I do have a few people in the plus sized community who I definitely look up to and would consider role models. I think it’s worth mentioning Brittany Gibbons again she has helped me immensely with my body acceptance and self-love. She is what I would consider a “Force to be Reckoned With”. Another person who inspires me every time I read a Facebook update or a new blog post is Mirna Valerio from Fat Girl Running. This woman is breaking barriers and perceptions every day. She is definitely my plus size outdoor role model.
I think as AlpineCurves moves forward and we get closer to launching the website store, we need to make sure we have a place for everyone to share their successes. We need to have more “Plus Sized Outdoor Role Models.” Please let me know: Who are your plus sized role models? I have said it once and I will say it again, AlpineCurves is going to be more than just a store to get your outdoor clothing and gear; it’s about building a community.
